My flock is out of the coop every day by daylight and run around all day in a fenced area that's' about 1/2 acre and they have a pond grasses weeds a shed many half tubs up side down to jump on or set on and a toilet full of hay for resting or laying those eggs old empty milk crates a huge spool the roo uses to get higher on to express him self with a very loud and long crowing session., plus a nice coop the yard is fenced all around and the coop is chicken wire and a cement floor to keep other animals from digging under have 3 pens for peeps or injured birds or to keep to roos apart. There also are several trees in the yard so big birds would have a tough time to get a bird since they would have to swoop under a tree and try to get back up with the weight of a chicken which are the heavy breeds.
At night when the birds get ready they enter the coop and proceed to a roost area they all have an order as far as this goes as well the roo gets the best seat the hens will get one as well either beside the roo or on another area of this coop I use dirt to cover the floor with dead leaves to protect the birds feet and wings when they leave the roost in the morning......
You have to have a good coop or fenced in area to keep all predators out this may also include a over head net or wire to keep birds out but a net other critters will tear apart.so wire must be the source to use. Some people do allow the bids to run about while they are present to be sure they are safe but the birds like to peck and scratch for foods and a few days a week is ok but I think they do better out running around.
When I 1st started I didn't know wild animals do get the birds by ripping the heads off this is a coon or by ripping the body apart that's a weasel they are killers as well and will leave the birds all piled up or ripped apart.
a snake will will eat the entire thing with no trace. Cats kill eat soft areas will leave feathers and wings,
Skunks are egg stealer's and could kill smaller birds, Opossums rob the nests eat small birds right where they kill it and can attack the birds while at rest. Rats will roll the eggs away can kill baby birds, wolf will kill and take the whole bird, Fox will kill for the spot of it and could carry off one to feed on for self or for cubs.Bobcats will get the heads and leave wounds on back sides and necks.
Hawks, Eagles and Owls are after smaller birds and can carry off and will find feathers only.
When you want to know what critter is in your coop area place some soft sand around the outside of the coop area pen shed and see what tracks are present the next day if any....

I consider my chickens free range, even though they can't go all over the property. We fenced in around their coop, a huge yard, then covered over it with chicken wire. They can run around all over during the day with no problems from hawks or other predators, then they go in their coop at dusk to eat and roost, and they also go in the coop during the day to lay their eggs in their boxes. Good luck with yours!

Yes it's excellent if they can safely free range, as you say, but wherever you live there are going to be predators that will kill them if they are just left outside unsupervised - maybe not today, not tomorrow, not next week or month, but it will happen, sure as eggs are eggs. In the UK it's mainly foxes or dogs rather than hawks, but whatever is local to you will find them sooner or later.
So you need a good big enclosed run, with a fox proof skirt dug into the ground round the edges, or else a weld mesh liner over the run floor, attached to the side mesh to make a continuous surface that cannot be dug through. It's good if you can put a roof on the run, at least over part of it, as the chickens do need a dry area to feed and dustbathe, and have some shelter from the wind, rain and snow, all of which they hate. If the run isn't roofed its safer and stronger to also fit a weld mesh roof, so the whole thing becomes a secure sort of weld mesh box. If you use a small gauge mesh, smaller predators such as rats, mice and wild birds can't get in either, contaminate the food and water, and spread disease and parasites,
The run needs to give each chicken an absolute minimum of 2 square metres of floor space, more is better. Chickens must not be crowded or they may fight, bully each other, or suffer from stress, bad for their health and for egg production. A walk- in run is much better than the sort with a coop attached, which are never big enough for the number of birds that will fit into the coop provided, and are more difficult to clean out and walk around in. They will be perfectly happy and safe in there and you can enjoy letting them out sometimes when you feel it is safe to do so. Too much freedom can come at a heavy price!
You could join a good poultry forum to ask as may questions as you need, and get the help of other friendly experienced poultry keepers. Try this one, its in the UK but we have lots of USA members and we welcome input from people keeping chickens in different environments. See
http://poultrykeeperforum.com/index.php and also the accompanying
Poultrykeeper website about keeping chickens at http://poultrykeeper.com/
Hope to see you there! Good luck with the new venture.

So you need a good big enclosed run, with a fox proof skirt dug into the ground round the edges, or else a weld mesh liner over the run floor, attached to the side mesh to make a continuous surface that cannot be dug through. It’s good if you can put a roof on the run, at least over part of it, as the chickens do need a dry area to feed and dustbathe, and have some shelter from the wind, rain and snow, all of which they hate. If the run isn’t roofed its safer and stronger to also fit a weld mesh roof, so the whole thing becomes a secure sort of weld mesh box. If you use a small gauge mesh, smaller predators such as rats, mice and wild birds can’t get in either, contaminate the food and water, and spread disease and parasites,
The run needs to give each chicken an absolute minimum of 2 square metres of floor space, more is better.

Hedgehogs are clumsy and have poor eyesight, so multi-level cages should be avoided unless the ramps and levels are enclosed to prevent falling.

Most hedgehogs will go to the bathroom in a particular area of the cage, usually behind their wheel where they have privacy. A cat litter box would be much too big, but a shorter, smaller box would be ok.

Other important things to consider when choosing a cage include:

It should provide at least six square feet of space.

It should be tall enough to accommodate a wheel at least 11" inches in diameter (solid surfaced, such as a bucket wheel).

The bars must not be more than 1/2" or so apart to prevent young or small hedgehogs from attempting to escape, getting caught and asphyxiated.

The floor *must* have a solid surface, not wire. Hedgehogs are not graceful and don't have the best vision, so multiple levels and ramps should not be used unless they can be completely enclosed to prevent falls.

Hedgehogs are expert climbers, so the cage must have a secure top.

Storebought cages that might be suitable include the Marchioro Tommy K 120 and the Ferret Nation cage. If you google 'cube and coroplast' or 'c&c' you can see ideas on how to make your own.

For bedding, hedgehogs should never be kept on wood chips of any type, as some are actually toxic, and all wood chips can actually contain mites right in the package which will be expensive to treat, and all wood chips are dangerous to hedgehog eyes, ears, and other soft tissues. The best liners are pieces of thick fleece in light colors to make spotting blood easier cut to fit the cage.

The hedgehog should also have a place to hide, which can be a blanket or bag made from fleece, or a store-bought 'igloo.' Avoid wood hide places.
